Emm's View of Grandma's Tree, Digital Print, 2005

I've always been a sucker for shallow depth of field. I love the forground in focus and the backround blurred out, just barely recognizable. The eye rarely sees that way in life (except for those with less than perfect vision).

This is my daughter watching her grandma's tree go up for the christmas season.

I had a specific idea that I wanted to work with in a new painting, which is also the first in (hopefully!) a new series as well. I took a bunch of photos of these lemons, because these were the only fruits in the house (my initial 'ideal' fruit would have been apples, then pears, but I can't tell you when the last time an apple was in the house, and I honestly don't think there has ever been a pear in the house) but they ended up working surprisingly well, at least as a photograph.

I've only done the initial drawing for the painting (which is on gessoe watercolor paper, and will be an oil painting), so we'll see how that turns out in the end. The lemons will only be one small part of this first painting, though since I liked working with them so much so far (they take direction very well), I might end up doing several paintings and photos involving them.

At the Beach

These are untitled, as of yet. They're both gifts for my wife's birthday, which is tomorrow, and were taken labor day weekend.

The images are each about 10.5" wide, and are mounted on black board, then framed in 11"x14" black frames. I'm limited right now in size, as my printer can only handle the standard 8.5"x11" letter size, though the print quality is excellent. At some point I'd like to get a hold of an 13"x19" printer. Some prints just work so well at that size...

Landscapes are not my typical fare (although I do view my interior works as landscapes, of a sort), but I really enjoy painting them. This is the lighthouse on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, Outer Banks.
